Fresh Exchange is a program of Farmers Market Fund that provides a dollar for dollar match (up to $5) for all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds redeemed at the King, Buckman, Northwest and Kenton Portland Farmers Market locations.
Fresh Exchange funds can be used to purchase fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, cheese and some baked goods. Funds can also be used to purchase seeds and edible plant starts.
Since the inception of the Fresh Exchange in 2009, the program has helped put over $190,000 of fresh food into the hands of area residents in need. These funds have ultimately been directed into the hands of the region’s food producers, contributing to the success of the local food economy and fostering healthier communities.
How does it work?
Fresh Exchange is available to all SNAP participants at the King, Buckman, Northwest and Kenton Portland Farmers Market locations.
For every $1 of SNAP funds redeemed at the market, SNAP participants receive a matching $1 Fresh Exchange token (up to a $5 match).
To access the Fresh Exchange program, SNAP participants simply swipe their Oregon Trail EBT card at the market information booth in return for tokens to be used at the market. For every $1 of SNAP funds redeemed at the market, SNAP participants receive a matching $1 Fresh Exchange token (up to a $5 match) to purchase fresh food from local farmers and producers.
